Verachte nur Vernunft und Wissenschaft,
des Menschen allerhöchste Kraft,
laß nur in Blend- und Zauberwerken
dich von dem Lügengeist bestärken,
so hab' ich dich schon unbedingt.

Mephistopheles in Goethe's FAUST, 1790
(translation)

No testimony is sufficient to establish a miracle,
unless the testimony be of such a kind that its
falsehood would be more miraculous than the fact
which it endeavours to establish.

David Hume, Of Miracles, 1748

Humanist and Skeptical Websites I currently administer:

I was a pioneer in creating and administering websites for several different Humanist and Freethought organizations beginning in 1995. These websites have been improved and administered directly by their respective organizations since 2001.

My Definition of Humanism:

Humanism is a philosophy or world view based on naturalism--the conviction that nature or the universe is all that exists or is real. Naturalistic humanism serves for many humanists some of the intellectual, emotional, and social functions of religion, but without belief in transcendental realms and entities, deities, miracles, life after death, and the supernatural. Humanists seek to understand the universe by using science and its methods of critical inquiry--free inquiry, logical reasoning, empirical evidence, and the skeptical evaluation of conjectures and conclusions--to obtain reliable knowledge. Humanists affirm that humans have the freedom to give meaning, value, and purpose to their lives by their own independent thought, critical inquiry, and responsible, creative activity. Humanists stand for the building of a more humane, just, compassionate, and democratic society using a realistic ethics based upon human reason, experience, and reliable knowledge--an ethics that judges the consequences of human actions by the well-being of all life on Earth.
